Melt together 1/4 cup sugar and sliced almonds over medium to medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until almonds are 'candied'.
Tip: Use a metal utensil to stir, the hot sugar can melt plastic. The heat will break down the sugar without liquid - wait until you see it starting to melt before stirring.
Spread candied almonds on aluminum foil to cool. In large bowl layer lettuce, oranges (strawberries), almonds, and cheese.
Shake together wine vinegar, 1/2 cup sugar, oil, onion, dry mustard, and poppy seeds - until sugar is dissolved. Add dressing to salad just before serving and toss thoroughly.
Tip: to shake dressing again before adding to salad.
